Podcast: Pittsburgh Hurling, the Pucas- Sean Stayduhar & Aaron Williams

The Pittsburgh Hurling Club (the Pittsburgh Pucas) is a Greater Pittsburgh hurling team and a member of the United States Gaelic Athletic Association (USGAA).  The Pucas were the Midwest Division Champions in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015; they hope to reclaim the title this year (2017).  The Irish sport of hurling, at times referred to as the “fastest game on grass” or the “greatest sport you’ve never heard of,” is over 3,000 years old and combines skills of lacrosse, field hockey, and baseball.  It is a stick (hurley) and ball (sliotar) game, played by teams (of 7, 13, or 15) on a rectangular pitch with H-shaped goals at each end.  The primary object is to score by putting the ball over the bar for a point or driving the ball through the goal for three points.  Irish teams play 15 per side, while most teams in America play 13 per side.  For more information on hurling (and camogie, an Irish stick-and-ball game played by women, that is almost identical to hurling) and to answer the question: What is a puca?
