Podcast #10-18 Jim Thornton- Writer of Adventures and Swimmer

Jim Thornton (in his own words): Magazine writer/one time winner & 4 time nominee, National Magazine Awards; masters swimmer whose top competitive accomplishments include six No. 1 in the country times in my age group during various years  (2017, 2016, and 2012) plus one No. 1 in the world time (2012).

Jim was born in Pittsburgh, moved away for college in 1970 and only returned for good in 1995.  “We had been living in Minnesota, but my wife and I started to fear our two young sons would freeze to death there while waiting for the school bus so decided to move back to my boyhood stomping grounds and its relatively clement weather.

Jim used to write the Oddventures column for National Geographic Adventure magazine, and this “gave me all sorts of opportunities to experience eccentric physical activities, from snowbiking through a half pipe, to swimming through a feeding frenzy of sharks, to being part of a paddleboard relay from Key West to Havana.”
