Podcast 44:18 Pittsburgher Highland Farms- Dana O’Connor & Mark Smith

Pittsburgher Highland Farm (in their own words) is the realization of a dream to produce quality cattle in a sustainable environment and provide healthy and tasty beef to discriminating consumers at an affordable price. After a lengthy career in real estate and community development, owner Mark Smith, went back to his dairy farm roots and began to experiment with Scottish Highland cattle on rented pasture. He is continually working to implement a natural farming system that is both humane and environmentally responsible.

Smith partnered with Dana O’Connor in 2014 and together they have more than tripled the size of the operation, further fulfilling the mission of providing healthy, environmentally sustainable beef at an affordable price. Dana’s interest in grass fed beef grew from an interest in health and wellness and the ability of quality, nutrient dense diet to create health. She has completed a nutritional therapy certification in order to further her knowledge and understanding of the intersection of food and health. She also serves as the chapter leader of the local Weston A Price Foundation.

Pittsburgher Highland Farm is located near Mount Pleasant in the lush grassy foothills of the Laurel Highlands with a distribution warehouse in Wilkinsburg, an eastern Pittsburgh neighborhood.

The farm adheres strictly to USDA standards for organic, grass-fed, naturally raised, and humanely treated livestock, as well as Quality Highland Beef protocols developed by the American Highland Cattle Association.

FitLabPGH is a podcast about movement and movement opportunities in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  Once a week we also highlight a FitLabPGH mover…someone who understands that movement is a lifestyle…not just an activity.  The questions are lightly edited to allow for easy readability.

This Week: Rebecca Brown, Pure Forme Training

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area?  Yes, sort of. Grew up in Monroeville, but moved away when I was 18. I’ve recently moved back to the area (after being in Seattle for 12 years) to be closer to family.

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area?  Biking with my family along all the trails. Hiking/wandering in the woods. Stair climbing workouts!

Describe your fantasy movement-focused vacation…cost is not an object…where do you go and what do you do?  Definitely somewhere in Europe, along the Mediterranean. My days would be spent walking/biking, eating, and soaking in as much of the culture as possible, feeling completely relaxed.

What is your go-to weekday breakfast? Your weekend breakfast?  Fried duck egg with turkey sausage, sautéed spinach and mushrooms over brown rice, topped with a locally made kraut. Same on the weekends!

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy.  Still (happily) exploring all the new restaurants Pittsburgh has so I feel like I need some more time to answer this question! However the chocolate croissants from Mediterra Cafe are pretty damn good.

What is the most unusual and/or challenging movement activity you’ve done? Would you do it again?  I took a TRX/yoga class a few years ago and it was an interesting combination, especially using the straps to get into handstands/headstands. Also, I ran a half marathon once. It was pretty awful and I wouldn’t do it again. Not a fan of running 😉

What movement activity/event are you looking forward to in the next year?  Kind of a lame answer, but yoga. My body and mind would benefit from incorporating a more regular yoga routine into my life.

Would you rather go scuba diving or sky diving?  Hmmm, neither because I can’t swim well and I’m scared of heights. If I had to choose, then scuba diving.

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice?  Any of the following: Acupuncture, meditation, journaling, or soaking in a warm salty bath.

What is the one place visitors to Pittsburgh “must” see?  Cathedral of Learning or the Carnegie Museum of Art.
