FitLabPGH Features #4:19 Sally Sherman

FitLabPGH is a podcast about movement and movement opportunities in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  Once a week we also highlight a FitLabPGH mover…someone who understands that movement is a lifestyle…not just an activity.  The questions are lightly edited to allow for easy readability.  Click FitLabPGH Features for more info if you want to be featured/know someone who should be featured.

This Week: Sally Sherman

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area?  No, I was born in New Bethlehem, PA and moved to Pittsburgh in 1999 to work for the professional dance company, Pittsburgh Dance Alloy.

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area?  1. Exploring the many beautiful trails by foot and by Mountain Bike 2. Venturing out on my road bike with my family to explore the city and beyond 3. Attending a yoga class in one of the many yoga studios owned by my friends

Describe your fantasy movement-focused vacation…cost is not an object…where do you go and what do you do?  Bike-packing across Europe with my family

What is your go-to weekday breakfast? Your weekend breakfast?  I eat two breakfasts on the weekdays! One is a smoothie packed with as many nutrients as possible and the other is a homemade vegan chia seed pudding (both of which are created by my fiancée). Weekend breakfasts are usually a bagel with almond butter and sliced banana on the way out the door with my bike.

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy.  Pittsburgh has become a beautiful mecca of amazing restaurants (a lot of which are vegan and vegetarian friendly!). Aladdin’s is one of my family’s favorites.

What is the most unusual and/or challenging movement activity you’ve done? Would you do it again?  I have completed two Ironman triathlons and a 50 mile ultramarathon and had a blast the whole time. Last month, I served as a hearing guide in the 24-hour World’s Toughest Tough Mudder in Atlanta for my best friend who is going deaf. I have never done an obstacle race before but needed to escort her on the course. That was definitely unusual and I had imposter syndrome the entire time.

What movement activity/event are you looking forward to in the next year?  I am currently training for the Leadville 100 Mountain bike race in the country’s highest city, Leadville, Colorado.

Would you rather go scuba diving or skydiving?  I would rather drink coffee in bed.

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice?  Nature is my healing. Everything in it is perfectly imperfect. When I go out into the woods, climb a mountain or sleep in the outdoors, it connects me to the earth and allows me to accept all that is perfectly imperfect about myself.

What is the one place visitors to Pittsburgh “must” see?  North Park! Pittsburgh has a beautiful, enormous park right outside the city. North Park has everything from paddle boarding to ice skating to miles of single track mountain biking. It feels like a secret gem every time I am there.
