FitLabPGH Features #19:19 Puddin aka Newlander’s Strawberry Puddin

FitLabPGH is a podcast about movement and movement opportunities in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  Once a week we also highlight a FitLabPGH mover…someone who understands that movement is a lifestyle…not just an activity.  The questions are lightly edited to allow for easy readability.  Click FitLabPGH Features for more info if you want to be featured/know someone who should be featured.

This Week: Puddin aka Newlander’s Strawberry Puddin

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? No – I was born in Chesterland, Ohio at Newlander Labradors.  When my breeder, Des, reluctantly decided to part with me, the FitLabPGH Team purchased me and moved me to Finleyville, PA two weeks ago (I’ve been told that’s in the South Hills of Pittsburgh).

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? Hiking in Mingo Creek Park; running around the back yard with Maggie the Black Lab (Ben doesn’t like it when we do this); stretching (downward facing dog is my favorite pose)

Describe your fantasy movement-focused vacation…cost is not an object…where do you go and what do you do? My life is pretty much a vacation because I’m not a working dog.  I would enjoy a car ride followed by a hike…bonus points if I get wet and muddy on the hike, then toweled off by a friendly human.

What is your go-to weekday breakfast? Your weekend breakfast? I stick with dog food for my main meals, supplemented by the occasional carrot or berry (blueberries are my favorite).

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. So far, all I’ve tried is dog food, carrots, berries, and ice chips…I’ve heard good things about the doggy ice cream at Bruster’s…I’m hoping to try that soon…

What is the most unusual and/or challenging movement activity you’ve done? Would you do it again? Climbing and descending stairs! I learned to climb up the stairs pretty quickly, but I was really nervous about going down the stairs…Ben has been coaching me, and I will definitely keep practicing!

What movement activity/event are you looking forward to in the next year? Climbing up and down the stairs without supervision…I want to be able to follow Maggie the Black Lab (and the cats).  Also, I’m looking forward to learning to jump into the Jeep (Ben said he’d rather help me in, but I’m fairly certain I can do it on my own).

Would you rather go scuba diving or skydiving? I like water. I don’t like jumping out of the Jeep…so I guess scuba diving, but I’d probably stick to doggy paddling in the water.

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? Naps!

What is the one place visitors to Pittsburgh “must” see? I’ve only been in the Pittsburgh area for 2 weeks. So far, I’m enjoying Mingo Creek Park.  I’ve heard South Park is nice too.
