FitLabPGH is a podcast about movement and movement opportunities in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Once a week we also highlight a FitLabPGH mover…someone who understands that movement is a lifestyle…not just an activity. The questions are lightly edited to allow for easy readability. Click FitLabPGH Features for more info if you want to be featured/know someone who should be featured.
This Week: Rollo the Kitty
Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? I am originally from just outside Philadelphia, and my mom and dad are both originally from the Pittsburgh area. My ancestry is Scottish and British.
What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? Staying active is important in our family. My favorite movement activities are walking around Bloomfield/plotting my escape, playing with my toys (laser pointer!), and running around making my purrrents chase me. Sometimes my purrents don’t feel like playing with me after a long day of work, so that’s where I come in and get them moving! I dramatically meow my face off until they get the hint!
Describe your fantasy movement-focused vacation…cost is not an object…where do you go and what do you do? My fantasy vacation would be going to the 9th Life Cat Sanctuary in Meowi (Maui, Hawaii) or the Lanai Cat Sanctuary (Lanai, Hawaii). I would run around and play with all the cats, go fishing with my bare paws in the Pacific Ocean, and chase the wild chickens around the island.
What is your go-to weekday breakfast? Your weekend breakfast? Fancy Feast all day, e’ry day. I will only eat the Grilled style though. I won’t touch it if it’s the flaked style, paté style or the medleys.
What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. My favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh Bloomfield grass. My parents tell me not to, so that makes it a lot more fun to eat.
What is the most unusual and/or challenging movement activity you’ve done? Would you do it again? Learning to go on walks outside on a leash and harness is my most challenging/unusual movement activity. It has taken a lot of practice, but I’ve gotten pretty good at it, and I really love it. Now I want to do it everyday. I have a LOT of energy, so going for walks and checking out the scenery helps me feel balanced and happy.
What movement activity/event are you looking forward to in the next year? My grandma sent us a video of a cat swimming today, so I’m hoping my purrents will let me try swimming next.
Would you rather go scuba diving or skydiving? I would rather go sky diving so I can try to catch some birds on the way down. I haven’t caught one yet!
What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? My personal R&R motto is “you can never take enough naps.” I love sleeping. It’s good for my kitty soul. If you come over to my house, there’s a good chance you’ll find me passed out snoozin’ somewhere. You can wake me up as long as you rub my belly.
What is the one place visitors to Pittsburgh “must” see? One time my mom took me to Schenley Park and it was a beautiful place for a walk. I was surprised how close to the city it was with so much wide open green space.
