FitLabPGH Features 9:20 Maggie the Black Lab

FitLabPGH is a podcast about movement and movement opportunities in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  Once a week we also highlight a FitLabPGH mover…someone who understands that movement is a lifestyle…not just an activity.  The questions are lightly edited to allow for easy readability.  Click FitLabPGH Features for more info if you want to be featured/know someone who should be featured.

This Week: Maggie the Black Lab

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? If so, why are you still here? I was born in Carrollton, Ohio at Camolot Labradors; when I was 8 weeks old, Ben purchased me and moved me to Finleyville. I’m still here because Ben is my staff person!

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? Single-track hikes in Mingo Creek Park; Wrestling with Puddin the Yellow Lab; Chasing The Girl (aka, Lisa) up hills during our fartlek sessions.

Describe the best vacation you’ve ever taken? Where did you go? What movement activities did you include? My life is pretty much a vacation, but I did have a fun road trip last year when we went to Ohio to buy Puddin the Yellow Lab.  We took walk / stretch breaks at highway rest stops, and on the way home, we explored a little park in Sewickley.

What is your favorite pre- or post-workout snack? Pre-workout: a blueberry or raspberry from Ben’s breakfast. Post-workout: peanut butter or pumpkin dog treats…or sometimes a few pieces of cat food (chicken flavor).

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. Carrots…or maybe pumpkin…

Do you have a movement activity on your “bucket list”? If not, what’s a movement activity/event you’re looking forward to in the next year? I am looking forward to more stream crossings…and chasing The Girl up bigger hills.

What do you think is the biggest obstacle to getting people to move more? They don’t have Labradors.  If you have a Labrador, you know you need to get us outside and moving almost every day…or we will destroy your house.  Ha Ha Ha…

What do you feel is the most adventurous movement activity you’ve ever done? Bushwhacking in Mingo Creek Park when there’s a fallen tree blocking the trail, or when Ben says there’s too much mud (how can there be too much mud?) on the trail

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? Napping on my dog bed…sometimes Gracie the Cat curls up and naps with me…she keeps me warm.

What is your favorite spot in Pittsburgh? (Bonus points if it is a “hidden gem”) Mingo Creek Park…as long as we don’t encounter any off-leash dogs.
