FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 21:22 It’s OK to Take a Day Off.

Have you heard the news from the FitLabPGH Labs??? We’ve introduced Labrador Lessons from the FitLabPGH Podcast! Every Thursday, we’ll be bringing you wisdom from the FitLabPGH Labradors (with occasional input from the cats).

It’s ok to take a day off.

As Labradors, we love to move, but we understand that our bodies need occasional rest days. Yesterday was one of those days. Instead of a hike with the humans, we had a “spa day” at Woody’s Dog Wash and enjoyed naps with our feline friends. Of course, we still made time to move and play in the backyard.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, make time for rest and recovery. Take an occasional day off…from work…or from working out…or from watching the news. Relax and recharge. Make time to Move and Play…and REST. Find ways to manage your stress, so that you’re energized and ready to get back to your regular schedule after your break.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 20:22 First Impressions Matter.

Have you heard the news from the FitLabPGH Labs??? We’ve introduced Labrador Lessons from the FitLabPGH Podcast! Every Thursday, we’ll be bringing you wisdom from the FitLabPGH Labradors (with occasional input from the cats).

First impressions matter.

As Labradors, we love to get outside to move with our humans. When we do, we stay alert to keep our humans, and ourselves, safe. When we see off-leash dogs, we need to assume they are unfriendly and/or uncontrolled, and we change our route to keep our distance and stay safe.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, make a good first impression on other outside movers by being a responsible park/trail user! Leash your humans. A friendly greeting to passerby is great, but keep a polite social distance. In other words: don’t lunge at other trail users and give others room when passing. A little trail etiquette goes a long way to allowing everyone to enjoy their outdoor movement time.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 19:22 Summer is Coming; be Sun Smart.

Have you heard the news from the FitLabPGH Labs??? We’ve introduced Labrador Lessons from the FitLabPGH Podcast! Every Thursday, we’ll be bringing you wisdom from the FitLabPGH Labradors (with occasional input from the cats).

Summer is coming; be Sun Smart.

As Labradors, we love to move…on any terrain…at any speed…in almost any weather…but full disclosure: we don’t love hot, humid days…so we adjust our movement routine to stay safe and healthy when temps rise. We avoid the heat of the day by hiking early in the morning. We seek shade and soft surfaces when possible (sunshine + hard surfaces = burned paws). We slow our pace as necessary, and we stop for regular water breaks.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, take steps to stay safe and healthy as summer temps arrive. Use sunscreen and/or sun protective clothing. Stay hydrated…bring more fluids than you think you’ll need, and consider adding electrolytes when sweat is a factor. And adjust your pace as necessary when heat and humidity rise. Take home message: stay safe today, so that you can keep moving tomorrow and through the summer.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 18:22 You Don’t Need a Special Occasion to Move

Have you heard the news from the FitLabPGH Labs??? We’ve introduced Labrador Lessons from the FitLabPGH Podcast! Every Thursday, we’ll be bringing you wisdom from the FitLabPGH Labradors (with occasional input from the cats).

You don’t need a special occasion to move.

As Labradors, we love to move…on any terrain…at any speed…in almost any weather (full disclosure: we don’t love hot, humid days). We don’t wait for a Doggy Dash 5k or National Walk Your Dog Day to take our humans out for a walk/hike/jog…we make daily movement part of our lifestyle, year-round.
Whether you have 2 legs or 4, don’t wait for an event or special occasion…get moving today. Find an activity you enjoy, then make time to move. Hate running? Take a walk! Explore a local park by hiking the trails. Grab a helmet and go for a bike ride. We understand some humans prefer indoor movement…that’s ok; our cats are like that…climb the walls, do some mobility work…just move!
