This Week: Sandor Koppanyi

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? Kind of. My mom is born and raised in Sewickley and I personally moved 7x before the end of high school but I always came back to Pittsburgh every summer. After college, I knew that I wanted to move away from Kentucky and made my final decision to live in Pittsburgh since I knew I would have support from family nearby and there is a growing fitness scene!

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? Training in Olympic weightlifting at Pittsburgh Fitness Project. Taking my kettlebell or steel mace to a park and doing a random workout for an hour. Working on my “pretty boy,” muscles at my apartment with kettlebells, bands, and perfect pushups.

Describe your fantasy movement-focused vacation…cost is not an object…where do you go and what do you do? This would be later in life when I don’t care as much about brute strength compared to how I feel, but I would spend a summer in India or Thailand and do a yoga excursion. Not necessarily a teacher certification, but just escape reality for a while and enjoy nature as well as be in tune with my mind and body for an extended period of time.

What is your go-to weekday breakfast? Your weekend breakfast? 1 cup rolled oats with a handful of chopped almonds, cinnamon and a banana. Then I soak the oatmeal with a protein shake instead of water. On the weekends I love having a breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, guacamole on the bread, then some bacon on the side.

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. I love a lot of restaurants in Pittsburgh, and with my Hungarian heritage I would recommend Huszar 10/10. You probably wouldn’t get better Hungarian food in America unless someone’s grandma makes it, they are really friendly and they even have some Hungarian alcohol on hand if you’re feeling adventurous.

What is the most unusual and/or challenging movement activity you’ve done? Would you do it again? I’ve done quite a variety and when it comes to unusual, I’d say it would be a Pure Barre class. Unless you were a former dancer there’s basically no way to prepare your body for what’s to come and it can be brutal. But my most challenging workout involved using my street back home that was .2 miles long on Thanksgiving 2 years ago. I did frog jump squats down one end, walked back, then walking lunges down one end, walked back and then monster walks with a slingshot down to one end. It was over a half mile of exercises and my legs were sore for almost a full week!

What movement activity/event are you looking forward to in the next year? I’m competing in the Arnold Classic for weightlifting in the 73kg class. It’s my first American Open meet!

Would you rather go scuba diving or skydiving? Sky diving

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? Getting a light pump throughout the body, a long walk listening to a podcast on a beautiful day, work on Pilates or do a random free yoga class.

What is the one place visitors to Pittsburgh “must” see? My 3rd cousins from Hungary visited at the end of this summer but were only in town for a short time and I took them to Mt. Washington overlook. It’s a great view of the city but if you have time I think seeing the strip district is great too.

This Week: Maggie & Puddin – 20K Challenge

We’ve heard you’re participating in the 20K Virtual Challenge from Northeast K9 Conditioning. What motivated you to join the challenge? We believe that movement is a lifestyle, not just an activity.  We want to encourage other dogs, and their humans, to get outside and move more!

Where will you be completing the challenge? We happily walk / jog / hike wherever Ben takes us…now that the weather is FINALLY getting cooler, we’re hoping to complete most of the challenge on the trails of Mingo Creek Park…we especially enjoy hills and single-track trails.

Have you encountered any difficulties since beginning the challenge? Maggie: I haven’t, but Puddin the Puppy sprained her left front paw a few days into the challenge.  The humans are making her rest until it heals. She’s already feeling better, so I don’t think we’ll have a problem completing the challenge!

Do you have any tips for less active dogs who are thinking about joining the challenge? Start slowly! You have until the end of December to complete the 20K (that’s 12.4 miles), so you can start with really short walks and gradually build up to longer walks.  Also, be sure to ask your human for a treat after you finish a walk.

What are you going to do with the medal when you complete the challenge? Post it on social media, of course…forget about “Medal Monday”…we’re going for “Medal Month”!!!

Kelly Kuhn PT- Telemedicine & Physical Therapy




Kelly Kuhn, MPT, CSCS, PES, Cert-TMD, Cert-MST (in her own words): I became a physical therapist and a CSCS almost 18 years ago because I was an athlete and wanted to work with athletes. I started my career in Florida, my home state, working with athletes. Over time I began to work more with every day pain and injuries as well and realized that the same “athlete” principals apply to everyone. But, I also really began to focus on running as my way to stay connected to the athletic population. I just love getting people moving and back to what they love doing no matter what it is and feel that changing the way we look at and approach pain, movement and exercise can have major benefits to our overall well-being.

This Week: Megan Clouner

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? I was born in Denver, Colorado but was raised in Pittsburgh.

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? The Montour Trail is a go to for our family. We love to run and bike the trails. The old railroad tunnels are always cool to see and run through. Mingo Creek Park – trails paved/off road in the woods, covered bridges, playgrounds, streams for playing/crayfish catching!….we love the options Mingo gives us! It’s a favorite of ours for training or just family fun! Transcend Bodyworks – I go to Bethany in Bridgeville for Hotworx workouts and massages. Hotworx is a program that uses heat and infrared technology while you workout (isometric and HIIT). It’s an extremely effective and efficient workout.

Describe your fantasy movement-focused vacation…cost is not an object…where do you go and what do you do? Patagonia would be an incredible trip. The scenery is unmatched and the area offers hiking, climbing, fishing, and so much more. Sweden/Norway – My family originates from this area. I’d love to just go and explore everything these countries have to offer.

What is your go-to weekday breakfast? Your weekend breakfast? During the week my go to is a protein shake. I need a quick breakfast without sacrificing health. I use Arbonne protein, which is a plant-based source. During the weekend, I typically stick with my shake, but we love making pancakes as a family. I do love avocado toast though too!

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. I truly can’t think of one specific place! Eating your way through the Strip District is always good! Eating breakfast at Pamela’s, stopping at Roland’s for a bloody Mary, grabbing snacks from all the small vendors on the street! Dinner at any of the restaurants overlooking the city from Mount Washington is never a bad choice! The views are incredible. Sarris in Canonsburg is a must for the old school ice cream parlor.

What is the most unusual and/or challenging movement activity you’ve done? Would you do it again? My family loves Colorado, and with that comes hiking and mountain climbing. We go once a year and always make sure to bag a few 14ers each time. While it’s unusual for most, it is a favorite of ours!

What movement activity/event are you looking forward to in the next year? The Pittsburgh Half Marathon. I ran this race for years, until our first daughter was born race weekend 6 years ago. This year, her birthday is finally not on race weekend! I’m excited and anxious to run this race again! My family has a few ultramarathon trail races in the works too!

Would you rather go scuba diving or skydiving? My husband and I went sky diving and it was an incredible experience. We went to New Orleans when the Steelers played the Saints, Halloween weekend, and decided why not! (Pre marriage and kids lol) Not sure I’d do it again but I think it is something every one should do once! Scuba diving scares me! Maybe snorkeling?!

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? I love a good massage post race, or a session in a steam room. Hotworx Yoga is a great way to unwind and stretch.

What is the one place visitors to Pittsburgh “must” see? There is nothing more “Pittsburgh” than the Strip District on a weekend. Mount Washington for the views! The Phipps Conservatory, especially during the holiday season.
