FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 30:22 Don’t Take Your Health for Granted




Be thankful for good health.

In other words, don’t take your health, or your ability to move, for granted. We’re healthy Labradors, and we enjoy our daily walks/hikes/jogs with our humans. Recently, our humans had COVID. Luckily, they’re active, healthy people, and they had relatively mild symptoms, so they were still able to take us for our walks. We know that injuries and illness happen. When they do, appreciate the opportunity to keep moving in any way that you can. And when you ARE healthy, get outside and enjoy moving more!

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, don’t take your health for granted. Make the most of your opportunities to move, and prioritize taking care of yourself!

Or, for the humans: Move More. Complain Less. As Labradors, we generally have a positive attitude. Any day that we get to go outside and move with our humans is a good day. OK, so we don’t LOVE heat and humidity…especially if they’re combined with sunshine…but you won’t hear us complaining about a movement opportunity.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, appreciate any opportunity to move. Of course you CAN find something negative in any movement session (it’s too hot; it’s raining; the class is too crowded; the instructor didn’t single me out), but you can also choose to focus on the positive aspects of any movement session. So follow the lead of the Labradors: Wag More. Bark Less.

It’s the Little Things.

As Labradors, we know that the “little things” are the most important things…time spent hanging out with friends and family…a walk in the park…a hike in the woods…an afternoon nap with a friendly cat…these things are all FAR more important than the brand of your watch, the price of your car, or the size of your house.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, take a moment today to appreciate the “little things” that make your life special…while you’re appreciating those things, remember to hug your friends/family/pets and tell them you appreciate them.

As Labradors, we know that rest and relaxation are part of a healthy lifestyle…and we live with cats who remind us of the importance of napping…but we also know that movement is a lifestyle…and we make it part of our lifestyle…even when we go on vacation. We’re at “Club Med” right now while our humans attend a conference, but we’re making time for daily walks and playtime with our fellow guests. We’re pretty sure our humans are finding time to move in New Orleans too!

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, make regular movement (not just “workouts”) part of your lifestyle…even when you’re on vacation!

Yesterday (6/29/22) was Puddin the Yellow Lab’s 4th birthday. In honor of the occasion, we let her choose today’s Labrador Lesson…her message? On your birthday, or on other special occasions, you should choose IF you want to celebrate and HOW you want to celebrate. Maybe you want to hang out with friends; maybe you want to stay home and take a nap; or perhaps you want to hike up a monster hill. There is no wrong way to celebrate…as long as you, and those around you, stay safe.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, choose to celebrate your special occasions in a manner that makes you happy…and keeps you safe. Don’t worry about how that celebration, or lack of celebration, looks on social media.

Being Labradors, we’re naturally happy animals, but it’s still important to make time in your life for the things that make you happy. We suggest you pick 2-3 things that bring you happiness, then make scheduling those things a priority. Our top picks: hiking with our humans; napping with our friends; and commemorating a hill climb with a summit celebration.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, find a few things that make you happy, then make time for those things in your schedule!

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 24:22 Hydration is Essential

Hydration is Essential.

Hydration is important, year-round, for Labradors and their humans…but when the weather gets warmer, hydration becomes critical. When we walk/hike in temperatures above 60 degrees, our humans bring Berkey Water Filters filtered water in our Nalgene bottle for our water breaks. When heat and humidity are a factor, our humans add electrolytes to their water; their current favorite electrolyte source is LMNT.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, remember to hydrate yourself and encourage your movement companions to hydrate!

Don’t wait for motivation; Just Move.

As Labradors, we love to move, whether we’re hiking/jogging, taking a recovery day stroll, or playing around in the backyard. But we understand that humans look for “motivation” to move. We think movement is fun…isn’t that enough motivation? If not, here’s an idea: on days when you don’t feel like moving, get outside for a short walk. Commit to walking for 10-20 minutes. You may find you want to keep moving, but even if you don’t, you will have made movement part of your day.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, don’t wait for motivation, or perfect conditions, or for your schedule to become less busy…Just Move.

Movement is a Lifestyle.

As Labradors, we love to move, whether we’re hiking/jogging, taking a recovery day stroll, or casually playing around in the backyard. Our cat roommates also like move and play. While we don’t attend structured “workouts,” we all make movement part of our lifestyle.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, make time to “just” move. Workouts and scheduled activities are great, but make time for unstructured movement in between your planned workouts. Take a stroll through the woods or a local park. Take an extra walk with your dog(s). Do a little mobility work before bed. Make time for a casual bike ride. Just Move.
