Part 1 was published on Wednesday 3/25/20. This is Part 2. Home Hack 1: Dedicate a space to be your home fitness place. ONE of our dedicated spaces is a “Mobility” room and includes: a SandDune Stepper, available at https://www.roguefitness.com ; a balance board or wobble board (search Google or Amazon); a foam roller; and a closet dowel turned mobility stick. Added bonus of a dedicated space: you might be inspired to move more every time you see it! If you’re looking for garage gym inspiration, check out Luke Koval, https://www.instagram.com/one_o.a.k/ on Instagram, and Richard Walters, https://www.instagram.com/richarda.walters/ on Instagram.

Home Hack 2: Turn your backyard or patio into a movement annex. Collect a variety of small, weighted tools and toys that allow you to craft at-home resistance training sessions. Look for: kettlebells and Indian Clubs. Looking for instruction for kettlebells? Check out Brett Jones of StrongFirst, https://www.instagram.com/brettjonessfg/ and https://www.instagram.com/strongfirst/  on Instagram. Added bonus for small tools and toys in the backyard: you can get some fresh air and movement at the same time. Plus, if you have dogs, it gives you something to do while the dogs do their business.

Home Hack 3: Build a jungle gym in the backyard…ok, like gymnastic rings in the living room, this isn’t for everyone…but if you have the space…our DIY jungle gym lets us channel our inner American Ninja Warriors. It gives us a place to “hang around” and a place to hang a suspension trainer. Take home message: the more movement tools you have at your disposal, the easier it is to make movement part of your lifestyle…especially when quarantined.

Final thought: if you’re starting or modifying a movement routine, don’t overdo it! Listen to your body, rest when you need to rest, and consider a consult with a qualified profession for guidance and injury prevention.

Do you have tips for creating a home fitness space or home movement routine? Please share with us in the comments. For movement ideas and inspiration, check out the FitLabPGH Podcast at www.FitLabPGH.com and on Spotify and YouTube. With over 140 episodes, and counting, it might lead you to your new favorite activity.

FitLabPGH is a podcast about movement and movement opportunities in the Pittsburgh, PA area.  Once a week we also highlight a FitLabPGH mover…someone who understands that movement is a lifestyle…not just an activity.  The questions are lightly edited to allow for easy readability.  Click FitLabPGH Features for more info if you want to be featured/know someone who should be featured.

This Week: Amanda Beckett

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? If so, why are you still here? Pittsburgh born and raised! I’m from the city and went to Pittsburgh Public Schools. I also went to Point Park University. I guess you could say I’m Pittsburgh obsessed. I never want to leave! I think it’s the perfect mix between big and small city, culture, diversity, and hometown vibes. Also, I have a very large family who all live in and around Pittsburgh and I can’t leave them.

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? I love Endure Barre, obviously. I joined as a member last January and became an instructor in September. I also love riding bikes on the various trails around the area, and just walking the city. On a nice summer night, you can’t beat the city views.

Describe the best vacation you’ve ever taken? Where did you go? What movement activities did you include? My husband and I went to San Francisco, CA and Maui, HI for our honeymoon 5 years ago. By far the best and most active vacation! We hiked across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fran and back. In Maui, we hiked, swam in the 7 pools, bikes down Haleakala, and zip lined! It was amazing. We can’t wait to go back in a couple of years with our children.

What is your favorite pre- or post-workout snack? I love peanut butter toast and a banana pre-workout and chocolate milk post-workout.

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. I love good bar food. Take me to Fatheads any day over a fancy steak house. I love a good grilled chicken club, homemade chips, and ranch dressing. If a place has good homemade ranch you can count me in.

Do you have a movement activity on your “bucket list”? If not, what’s a movement activity/event you’re looking forward to in the next year? I’d love to run a half marathon again! I’ve run two in the past. I also am looking forward to Body Rock-currently cancelled, but hoping it is rescheduled! I also love any of our group events at Endure Barre which I know will be coming once this quarantine is over!

What do you think is the biggest obstacle to getting people to move more? Time. Isn’t that the problem with everything? I never feel like there is enough time in a day but I make sure to make time for movement. Even if it’s a quick walk on the treadmill. I also think people struggle with finding workouts they enjoy. I was a soccer player in college and in the best shape. After I lacked motivation to do it in the gym on my own and then had two kids. After finding Endure Barre, I have found my motivation again!

What do you feel is the most adventurous movement activity you’ve ever done? Biking down Haleakala Volcano in Maui. It was so much fun, fast, and something different to do. I also played soccer in Paris and Amsterdam in college with our college team. It was definitely an adventure.

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? I love taking hot baths. I’ve been using epsom salts as well for helping with soreness and recovery. I also love reading a good book and just being alone.

What is your favorite spot in Pittsburgh? (Bonus points if it is a “hidden gem”) My favorite spot is not a hidden gem whatsoever. Haha I love Starbucks. Green tea Frappuccino’s all day everyday. Specifically the one on Cochran Road. Great people work there and they are so friendly and amazing!

This Week: Jeter Joseph Campbell

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? If so, why are you still here? No. I’m a southern dog. Born in Goldsboro, NC. Lived there for my first 3 years and then moved to the snowy north with my family.

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? walking my neighborhood, walking North Park and running away when I’m off my leash.

Describe the best vacation you’ve ever taken? Where did you go? What movement activities did you include? Topsail Island, NC. I love to run into the waves to fetch a tennis ball.

What is your favorite pre- or post-workout snack? Milkbone Minis (I’m watching my calories)

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. McDonald’s French Fries or any french fry, really.

Do you have a movement activity on your “bucket list”? If not, what’s a movement activity/event you’re looking forward to in the next year? I’d like to run free on the field at Yankee Stadium. My name indicates that I love baseball and the Yankees so I’d love to have free reign to run the bases at Yankee Stadium.

What do you think is the biggest obstacle to getting people to move more? Weather, for sure. I don’t like the ice or salt on my paw pads!

What do you feel is the most adventurous movement activity you’ve ever done? Jumping in the ocean waves!

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? Napping in the sun.

This Week: Maggie the Black Lab

Are you a Pittsburgh native? If not, what brought you to the Pittsburgh area? If so, why are you still here? I was born in Carrollton, Ohio at Camolot Labradors; when I was 8 weeks old, Ben purchased me and moved me to Finleyville. I’m still here because Ben is my staff person!

What are your three favorite movement activities in the Pittsburgh area? Single-track hikes in Mingo Creek Park; Wrestling with Puddin the Yellow Lab; Chasing The Girl (aka, Lisa) up hills during our fartlek sessions.

Describe the best vacation you’ve ever taken? Where did you go? What movement activities did you include? My life is pretty much a vacation, but I did have a fun road trip last year when we went to Ohio to buy Puddin the Yellow Lab.  We took walk / stretch breaks at highway rest stops, and on the way home, we explored a little park in Sewickley.

What is your favorite pre- or post-workout snack? Pre-workout: a blueberry or raspberry from Ben’s breakfast. Post-workout: peanut butter or pumpkin dog treats…or sometimes a few pieces of cat food (chicken flavor).

What is your favorite thing to eat in Pittsburgh? Note: it does not need to be healthy. Carrots…or maybe pumpkin…

Do you have a movement activity on your “bucket list”? If not, what’s a movement activity/event you’re looking forward to in the next year? I am looking forward to more stream crossings…and chasing The Girl up bigger hills.

What do you think is the biggest obstacle to getting people to move more? They don’t have Labradors.  If you have a Labrador, you know you need to get us outside and moving almost every day…or we will destroy your house.  Ha Ha Ha…

What do you feel is the most adventurous movement activity you’ve ever done? Bushwhacking in Mingo Creek Park when there’s a fallen tree blocking the trail, or when Ben says there’s too much mud (how can there be too much mud?) on the trail

What is your favorite recovery or self-care practice? Napping on my dog bed…sometimes Gracie the Cat curls up and naps with me…she keeps me warm.

What is your favorite spot in Pittsburgh? (Bonus points if it is a “hidden gem”) Mingo Creek Park…as long as we don’t encounter any off-leash dogs.
