FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 45:22 Ask Permission Before Approaching an Unknown Dog

Labrador Lesson for 11-10-22:

Ask permission before approaching an unknown dog.

As Labradors, we are friendly, energetic dogs, and because we’re also cute, we’re accustomed to humans and other dogs wanting to approach us when we’re out and about. We request that you please ask our humans before reaching out to touch (or sniff) us. This is for your safety as well as ours. If a stranger startles one of us, we might react with a growl…or worse…

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, it’s a good idea to get permission before approaching an unknown dog. Dogs might be leash aggressive…or in training…or afraid of strangers. Asking permission before approaching the dog helps to keep everyone safe.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 44:22 Don’t Let Weather Discourage Your Movement

Labrador Lesson for 11-3-22:

Don’t let weather discourage you from movement.

As Labradors, we love to get outside for a walk/jog in ANY weather. Granted, we prefer cold, snowy days to hot, humid days, but overall, we just like to get out and move. We understand certain humans are more particular about their weather preferences, but we suggest you look beyond the weather and commit to year-round movement…especially if you have dogs. Tired dogs are happy, healthy dogs, so unless your dog loves the treadmill, get prepared to get outside year-round.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, get prepared to make movement part of your lifestyle year-round. Pick up the proper gear, then move more, and keep moving, no matter the weather.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 42:22 You Don’t Need Technology to Move

Play

Labrador Lesson for 10-20-22:

The Labs once again asked Ben to be their spokesperson to tell you a dog is a part of your family. Check out the video, or just read their wise words.

You don’t need technology to move.

As Labradors, we make movement part of our lifestyle. All we need for our daily walks are collars, leashes, and a willing human. We understand that you humans love technology, but technology is NOT essential for movement. As Labs, we don’t have Strava accounts, and we don’t track our macros in MyFitnessPal or LoseIt. But we DO move on a regular basis and eat high-quality food.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, remember you don’t need technology to move. If you like to track (and share) your movement sessions and your food log, that’s great, but if you’d rather keep your movement sessions to yourself, that’s great too. And if you experience a technical glitch, and your movement session isn’t recorded by Strava…it still counts!!! So move more. Move often. And remember, you don’t need technology to make movement part of your lifestyle.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 41:22 Dogs Are Not Accoutrements

Play

Labrador Lesson for 10/13/22:

Dogs are not accoutrements.

The Labs once again asked Ben to be their spokesperson to tell you a dog is a part of your family. Check out the video, or just read their wise words. When you take your dog for a walk/run/hike, remember to take into account your dog’s needs. A Movement session with a dog is NOT all about you. Engage with your dog. Let the dog set the pace. If your dog loves to walk in the rain, you are going to get wet. You won’t melt. Move More. Move Often. Move with your dogs.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 40:22 Be Proactive About Your Health

Play

Labrador Lesson for 10/6/22:

Be proactive about your health.

The Labs wanted to talk about being proactive about creating a healthy lifestyle. They asked Ben to help out with the lesson…check out the video…or just read along for the essentials. Get your annual exam and recommended shots from your vet/doctor. If you have a cut, sprain, or other injury, consult a qualified medical professional. Eat real food. Move on a regular basis. The Labs prefer moving on most days to longer, “crush it” movement sessions on the weekends. Take home message: keep it simple, but be proactive – eat real food; move more; and visit a medical professional when needed.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 39:22 Dog Walk Essentials

Play

Labrador Lesson for 9/29/22:

Dog Walk Essentials.

The Labs wanted to share the essentials for a safe, fun dog walk. They asked Ben to help out with the lesson…check out the video…or just read along for the essentials. The most essential element is an engaged human, who is focused on the dogs! After that, the labs suggest you include the following items: 1. A stylish collar (the labs like climbing rope). 2. A sturdy, colorful leash (again, climbing rope is great). 3. Snacks (depending on distance/duration). 4. Water (depending on temperature). 5. A First Aid Kit.

The Labs believe in making movement a lifestyle, so, whether you have 2 legs or 4, gather the essentials, get outside, and get moving.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 38:22 Don’t Worry About How You Look…Just Keep Moving

Labrador Lesson for 9/22/22:

Don’t worry about what you look like…just keep moving.

From Maggie the Black Lab: as Labradors, we love to move. At the moment, I’m a bit embarrassed because I have a skin infection on my head (probably a result of scratching due to allergies). My humans took me to the vet. I’m getting treatment, and I’ll be ok, but they had to shave a few spots on my head, so I’m not looking my best. But I’m not going to let that stop me from enjoying my walks in the park!

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, don’t worry about what you look like, or whether others might judge you, just move! Whether it’s a physical condition, or a lack of the latest gear, or just a fear of looking awkward, try not to worry about appearances…just move. Movement has physical and mental benefits for 2- and 4-legged movers!

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 37:22 Create a Movement Back-Up Plan

Labrador Lesson for 9/15/22:

Create a movement back-up plan.

As Labradors, we love to move. Like most movers, we have our favorite movement routine. For us, that includes hiking in our local county park. When our favorite location isn’t available, due to an event like the Covered Bridge Festival or due to icy trails, we have a movement back-up plan that allows us to keep moving.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, we recommend creating a movement back-up plan that allows you to keep moving when life gets in the way of your preferred movement routine. Whether your favorite class is canceled or a work or family obligation prevents you from attending your movement activity of choice, if you have a back-up plan, you can still make movement part of your day. Keep a list of movement options, so that when your routine is disrupted, you can still find ways to just move.
