FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 31:22 Stay Safe Through the Dog Days of Summer

Stay Safe through the Dog Days of Summer.

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Dog Days of Summer, or the hottest days of the year, last from 7/3/22 to 8/11/22 this year in the US. The good news for us Labradors, who don’t enjoy the heat, is that the worst of this Summer’s heat wave may be nearing an end. But until the cool Fall weather arrives, we have a few tips: 1) avoid outdoor movement in the heat of the day. 2) seek shade and soft surfaces whenever possible. 3) bring plenty of fluids…for you and your 4-legged friends!

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, take heat safety seriously! Take precautions to prevent overheating and heat illness. Stay safe and cool today, so that you can Keep Moving tomorrow.

FitLabPGH Lab Lessons 19:22 Summer is Coming; be Sun Smart.

Have you heard the news from the FitLabPGH Labs??? We’ve introduced Labrador Lessons from the FitLabPGH Podcast! Every Thursday, we’ll be bringing you wisdom from the FitLabPGH Labradors (with occasional input from the cats).

Summer is coming; be Sun Smart.

As Labradors, we love to move…on any terrain…at any speed…in almost any weather…but full disclosure: we don’t love hot, humid days…so we adjust our movement routine to stay safe and healthy when temps rise. We avoid the heat of the day by hiking early in the morning. We seek shade and soft surfaces when possible (sunshine + hard surfaces = burned paws). We slow our pace as necessary, and we stop for regular water breaks.

Whether you have 2 legs or 4, take steps to stay safe and healthy as summer temps arrive. Use sunscreen and/or sun protective clothing. Stay hydrated…bring more fluids than you think you’ll need, and consider adding electrolytes when sweat is a factor. And adjust your pace as necessary when heat and humidity rise. Take home message: stay safe today, so that you can keep moving tomorrow and through the summer.
